Grandfamily Expo to Offer Vital Resources
June 7th, 2019

As we shared in a recent blog post, substance abuse and/or mental health issues have prompted a new generation of grandparents who, after parenting their children, are now raising their grandchildren. Custodial grandparenting isn’t new but the numbers have grown significantly. As a result, the “grandfamily,” America’s newest domestic unit, faces unique struggles.

In recognition of this trend, the Bucks County Drug & Alcohol Commission is offering a free Grandfamily Expo to provide access to key resources and information. The Expo is scheduled for Wed., June 19, 2019 from 3-8 p.m. at the Christ’s Home Community Center, 800 York Road, Warminster, PA. Childcare and free food will be provided.

Workshops will cover self-care, navigating the legal system, and child welfare, among others. There will be Narcan Training, and the Bensalem Police Department will show what to look for in “Behind Closed Doors” Mock Teen Bedroom. There also will be a Bucks County Resource Fair.

“This is an important event, not just for the value of the sessions offered, but for the benefits of connecting families in similar custody situations,” said Jeffrey M. Williams, founder and managing partner of Williams Family Law, P.C. “Knowing that you are not alone, and that you have access to a support system right here in Bucks County, can make the difference.”

The Expo is made possible through grants from the Bucks County Drug and Alcohol Commission, the Bucks County Area Agency on Aging, and Christ’s Home. Preregistration is required, especially if childcare is needed. Call Bucks County Drug & Alcohol Commission, Inc. at 215-773-9313 or click here for more information.
